The story of our dar!

We restore the past to enrich the future!

Dating back to the 18th century. Yes ! Our Dar has more than three centuries of history. It was built even before the French Revolution, the invention of the railway, electricity and the telephone.

Based on the archive of the Medina of Tunis, our house was built around 1703-1707 and remained almost the same until the end of the 20th century. Of course, changes and adjustments were necessary to adapt to the needs of the times and for the comfort of its inhabitants.

From the beginning, and like all the palaces, mansions and houses of the Medina of this period, the house was built in the authentic Tunisian architectural style. The house has an open-air space in its center, an atrium called "west A'dar" around which the living spaces, service spaces such as the kitchen and bathrooms and the staff rooms have been placed according to a deep thinking of well-being, comfort and the respect for the tradition, which revolves around intimacy and discretion.

Generally after acquiring the land and before starting to build, the happy owner of the futur house starts long discussions and modeling with first all the members of the family, without any distinction, and then with the builder, who plays the role of architect, the project manager of the work.

As nowadays, location is important for those who want to make a large home and provide an interesting legacy for future generations. Without a doubt, the first owner owner of our dar had thought about it! Our Dar is located in one of the most prestigious areas of the Medina, a few hundred meters from the most famous places such as the Great Zitouna Mosque of Tunis the beating heart of the Medina (9th century) and the government palaces . Surrounded by private palaces, private mansions, prestigious mosques and madrassas, and noble gold and perfume souks... Our dar is located on one of the main arteries of the Medina, in the district known as: " The Andalusian Quarter".

When we took over this three-century-old house and decided to renovate it, we committed to respecting every aspect of its original plan, but above all the soul of what is a traditional dar.

Today, El Patio Courtyard House is not just a guest house, it is also a story of personal commitment and deep interest in the ambitious conservation project of the Medina of Tunis. By restoring our Dar, and transforming it into a small-scale guest house, we aim to contribute to the conservation of the Old Town of Tunis and the strengthening of the social status of its inhabitants. By staying at El Patio Courtyard House, you contribute in your own way to supporting a sustainable and responsible business.
